Southwestern students spend day at the Capitol

Southwestern students and employees were at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines on Thursday, March 3, 2022, to celebrate Community College Day on the Hill and the Student Legislative Seminar.

During Community College Day on the Hill, Shawn Oaks, Southwestern industrial technology instructor, and Lane O'Brien of Corydon, industrial technology student, spoke with legislators and capitol visitors about SWCC's industrial technology program and the benefits of earning a college degree in industrial technology.

Two SWCC students named to 2022 All-Iowa Academic Team

Two Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students, Kaci Abildtrup of Creston, and Thomas Esterhuyse of Western Cape, South Africa, were honored as members of the 2022 All-Iowa Academic Team during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and held Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at 6 p.m., at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines.

SWCC invites you to celebrate National Agriculture Week

Come celebrate National Agriculture Week with the Southwestern Community College Agriculture Department! The festivities will include an Open House & National Agriculture Week Celebration at the Agricultural Sciences Center, located at the SWCC Ag Site (north of SWCC’s campus on Green Valley Road), on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. As part of the day, the Creston Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. to celebrate the expansion of the ag facility. Although construction of the facility was completed in 2020, due to COVID-19, an open house has not yet been held.

Looking at the calendar, Feb. 17, 2022, is earmarked Random Act of Kindness Day, but a group of five Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students didn’t wait for the holiday, performing an unbelievable and unprompted act of kindness one day ahead, on Wednesday, Feb. 16, for a SWCC worker they see every day when they head to SWCC’s on-campus cafeteria, The Spartan Café.

Transfer Day 2022 to be held at SWCC

Southwestern’s annual Transfer Day will be held on Wednesday, March 2, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., in the Instructional Center, room 180. During Transfer Day, SWCC students and advisors have opportunities to talk with transfer representatives from many four year colleges and universities all in one place. No matter where you are in the transfer planning process, Transfer Day allows you to do everything from begin searching for your transfer school, or ask those last minute questions before you transfer.

Iowa’s community colleges add more than $5.5 billion to Iowa’s economy

FEBRUARY 15, 2022, Des Moines, Iowa--Today, the Iowa Department of Education and the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees released an Economic Impact report about Iowa’s community colleges by Emsi Burning Glass. The report shows a $5.5 billion impact to Iowa’s economy, including the support of 87,149 jobs to Iowans during the last year. Southwestern president to receive Phi Theta Kappa Paragon Award

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, February 10, 2022--Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) will recognize 20 college presidents with the Paragon President Award during PTK Catalyst 2022, the society’s annual convention in Denver, Colorado, April 7-9. Southwestern's president, Dr. Marjorie McGuire-Welch, is among the 20 honorees.
