The residence halls will be closed from Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, to Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, for winter break. Students may return to campus on Saturday, Jan. 11, to be let into their rooms from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. or Sunday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Please contact your RA or residence hall coordinator to return to your room/apartment or you can report to the housing office in Spartan Suites for assistance.

During the spring of 2019, the Southwestern Community College board of trustees approved an expansion project at the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) agricultural site. The project is estimated at $1.8 million and construction began during summer 2019.
The project includes the following additions to the main facility at the SWCC Ag Site, which is located just north of the Creston campus:
• One 45-person classroom (approximately 1,000 square feet)
• One 24-person lab-style room (approximately 1,000 square feet)
• One 24-person classroom (approximately 750 square feet)
• Student lounge
• Mud room
• Two faculty offices

Make a name for yourself during a four-hour FREE event for SWCC students on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Student Center.
During this event, SWCC students can stop by and make a name or letter art print. Students may choose to make a print for themselves or make a gift for someone else.
This event is being brought to campus by the SWCC student activities department.

Classes will not be held and offices, including the Osceola and Red Oak Centers, will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 12, to allow Southwestern employees and students to attend the Celebration of Life service for Southwestern Vice President of Instruction Bill Taylor. The services will be Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. in the Southwestern Community College gymnasium.
Arrangements are being handled by Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Creston. Additional details may be found on their website:
SPARTAN CAFE HOURS: The Spartan Cafe hours for Tuesday, Nov. 12, are 8-10 a.m. and 2-7 p.m. Sack lunches will be available for pick-up before 10 a.m.
BASKETBALL GAMES: The women's and men's basketball games scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12, have been rescheduled. The women will play tonight, Nov. 11, at Marshalltown CC at 6 p.m. The men will play at Highland CC Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m.

Spartan Nation is shaken and hurting today as we mourn the loss of our colleague, mentor, coach, and friend, Vice President of Instruction Bill Taylor. Bill was extremely respected at Southwestern Community College; a humble and dedicated leader who would help anywhere needed at any time of day or night. His legacy will live on at Southwestern for years to come. Our thoughts are with Bill's family.

It is almost time to register for spring 2020 courses at Southwestern Community College (SWCC)!
Returning career and technical education students will begin registering on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1. Returning arts and sciences students will begin registering on Nov. 4. New SWCC students may register starting Nov. 11.

The SWCC Computer Club is hosting a chili supper at on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 5 p.m., in the Instructional Center, room 180. The chili supper will precede the Computer Club's raffle drawing for its fundraiser.

Spartan Spotlight is 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019! Interested in being a future Spartan? Register for Spartan Spotlight to learn what life as a Spartan is all about!
At Spartan Spotlight, visitors will hear from a panel of Southwestern student-athletes, meet with coaches, tour campus, and have the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives. Activities will be planned for parents, as well. Dinner is included in the visit and all visitors are invited to attend Southwestern's Community Appreciation Night Presented by Creston Automotive at the men's basketball game vs. Quakerdale Prep at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Gymnasium.

Fall Assessment Day is Friday, Sept. 27. Due to the training employees will be required to attend, keep the following in mind that day:
- Staff Assessment Day will be 8-10 a.m. in the Instructional Center, room 180. During this time, SWCC offices will be closed so employees can attend their training.
- Faculty Assessment Day will be 12:30-3:30 p.m., in the Instructional Center, room 180. Classes will NOT meet after 12 p.m.

Hypnotist Jim Wand will be performing on campus Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019, from 12-1 p.m., in the Student Center gymnasium.
Always a fan favorite, Wand travels the world with his one-of-a-kind hypnotist show. This event is free to SWCC students and employees.
Everyone in attendance is offered the opportunity to be hypnotized.
This event, which is free to SWCC students and employees, is being organized by Tracey Evans, student activities coordinator.

SWCC will host its annual Community Awareness Day on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 9-11 a.m. in the main hallway of the Instructional Center. A variety of community agencies will be on hand to provide information to SWCC students and staff about the services they provide.

Interested in joining the SWCC Drama Club? If so, plan to attend the first meeting (complete with pizza!) this Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m., in the Instructional Center, room 140.
Each year, the SWCC Drama Club presents a full-length play during the spring semester and a smaller play in the fall. The spring 2020 play will be “Love Letters,” with a March production date (prior to spring break).
This year, there is a new component to the SWCC Drama Club as well. The group will be doing monthly improv meetings and the club is hoping to attend a live showing of Whose Live is it Anyway at Hoyt Sherman in Des Moines on Nov. 23 (tickets are limited and must be ordered soon!).

The 2019-20 academic year is about to begin! Here are some announcements from various departments on campus to help you get started:
- SWCC Shoppe extended hours - The SWCC Shoppe, located in the Student Center, will be open on Saturday, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1-5 p.m. for your convenience.
- Spartan Cafe opens Monday - The Spartan Cafe will open for the school year on Monday, Aug. 26, at 7 a.m. The Spartan Cafe hours for fall semester are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday from 4-7 p.m.
- Business Office and Financial Aid extended hours - The SWCC business office, located in the Administration Center, will be open on Saturday, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1-4 p.m.
