CRESTON – The Southwestern men’s and women’s basketball program will be hosting youth camps in June.
The Southwestern Boys Individual Skills camp will be June 5-7 in the SWCC Student Center gymnasium. Youth in kindergarten through second grade will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., with an emphasis on the basic fundamentals and making the game fun. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. The cost is $35.
Youth in grades 3-8 will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a focus on the fundamentals in the morning. The afternoon will include daily contests and games. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. The cost is $90.
The Southwestern men’s program is also holding a high school team camp on June 8-9. The cost is $150 for one day or $250 for both days. Teams can stay overnight in on-campus apartments for $500 (including camp entry fee for both days). Teams will play three games a day. Both JV and varsity teams are encouraged to participate.

The Spartan Youth Basketball Individual Camps, hosted by the Southwestern women’s basketball program, will be held June 10-12 in the SWCC Student Center gymnasium.
The Elite Skills Camp for girls in grades 8-12 will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Youth Skills Camp for girls in grades 3-7 will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The cost of each camp is $80.
These camps are designed to develop and improve fundamental skills of all players. Specialized camp instruction will include station work in both offensive and defensive areas, position work, and competitive contests. Various competitions such as 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 will be implemented throughout camp. The camp will be divided by both age and ability groups, complemented by matching instruction and competition. Teamwork and communication skills will be built into station work and competitions. An emphasis will be placed on teaching the game through positive instruction from coaches and positive interaction with other campers.

Six students from Southwestern Community College's professional music program are being honored as student music award winners in the June 2019 issue of Downbeat Magazine.
The June issue was mailed last week to subscribers around the world. Awards recipients from Southwestern's School for Music Vocations included:

Notice is hereby given that there are on file with the Board Secretary of the Board of Trustees (the "Board") of Southwestern Community College (SWCC), Creston, Iowa (the "Community College", proposed plans, specifications, form of contract and estimate of costs (the "Contract Documents") for the construction of the Instructional Center Rnvtn Ph 5 and Ag Bid Addition (the "Project").
Sealed bids for the construction the Project will be received on behalf of the Board at the Board Room in the Administration Center at Southwestern Community College, 1501 West Townline Street, Creston, Iowa 50801 before 1 :00 p.m. local standard time on the 13th day of May, 2019. Offers will be opened publicly immediately after the time for receipt of bids at the above location.
The Project consists of, but is not limited to the two phased construction of; Phase 1 Ag Building 5,000 SF Addition to house two classrooms for approximately 30 students, two offices, 400 SF of hardened storm area, 800 SF of document storage and mud room. Phase 2 Science Lab renovation of Chemistry, Physics and Biology as well as office and prep space in the 300 Series Wing of the existing Instructional Building. Both phases include HVAC, lighting, electrical, and fire sprinkler upgrades.
No bidder may withdraw their bid for at least thirty (30) days after the scheduled closing time for the receipt of bids. The right to reject any or all proposals and to waive any irregularities is reserved by SWCC.
By virtue of Statutory Authority, the bidder shall give preference to Iowa Domestic Labor and products produced with the State of Iowa according to the provisions of the 1991 code of Iowa.

Southwestern Community College had 20 employees in attendance at the Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC) Spring Conference in Ankeny, from March 24-26, at DMACC’s FFA Enrichment Center. The conference, entitled “Be an Agent of Change,” had sessions for faculty, student services personnel, and administrators.
Southwestern instructors presenting breakout sessions during the conference included Tom Borland, Jody Nedley-Newcomb, Tom Rathmann, Kindra Coleman, Holly Booth, Adam Thiner, and Doug Greene.
Coleman (shown at left, in photo above) was honored as one of four finalists for the e11 Award for excellence in online instruction.

Southwestern's Drama Club will be performing Neil Simon's "Rumors" at 7 p.m. March 28-30 in the SWCC Performing Arts Center.
The production marks the fifth anniversary of the Drama Club presenting "Rumors" as its first production. Jennie Stamper, one of the original cast members, will be reprising the role of Claire in this year's performance.
"Rumors" is a hilarious farce that is sure to keep everyone laughing. The play takes place at Sneden's Landing townhouse, where the deputy mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of farce as they attempt to figure out what happened to their friend. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into hilarity.

The Spartan Cafe will be closed during Spring Break, March 18-22. This Friday, March 15, the Cafe will be open 7 a.m.-3 p.m., with a limited menu and will then close after that for break. The Spartan Cafe will re-open on March 24 at 4 p.m.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Cassidy Becker of Diagonal and Ashley Myshock of Creston were honored as members of the 2019 All-Iowa Academic Team during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and held Monday, March 4, 2019, at 6:30 p.m., at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines.

Becker, a May 2017 graduate of Diagonal High School, is an elementary education major. During her time at SWCC she has received the following assignments and honors: 2018-19 Phi Theta Kappa Iowa region vice president, Beta Eta Nu president, 2018 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar, and Five Star Competitive Edge completer. Becker plans to earn her Associate of Arts degree from SWCC in May 2019 and transfer to Northwest Missouri State University in the fall.
Ashley Myshock is in the nursing program at SWCC. Myshock earned her diploma in licensed practical nursing from SWCC in June 2018. She is currently a student in the registered nursing program and plans to earn her Associate of Applied Science in June 2019. She has been a Phi Theta Kappa member and has made the Dean’s List multiple semesters. Following graduation from SWCC, she plans to transfer to the University of Iowa to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
Phi Theta Kappa International serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students worldwide. Beta Eta Nu is SWCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Community colleges had their Day at the Capitol yesterday, March 5, in Des Moines. Each of Iowa’s 15 community colleges was in attendance to share information about the work of community colleges throughout the state.
During the event, each community college highlighted a career and technical education program in its display. The colleges coordinated their efforts so a variety of programs were represented. Southwestern Community College’s featured program was industrial technology. Instructor Henry Lemke, President Dr. Barb Crittenden, Vice President of Instruction Bill Taylor, and Board Member Jerry Smith were in attendance representing SWCC.

The SWCC Art Club is auctioning off a game table in a silent auction that runs from now through noon March 15.
The table, which is 24 inches by 24 inches, is on display at the SWCC library. It also includes checker and chess pieces.
The winner will be notified at the close of the auction. In the event of a tie, those bidders will be notified to ask for a final bid. Highest bid wins.

Returning students who are planning to live in the residence halls during the 2019-20 academic year must complete the online student housing application and submit it no later than April 1, 2019. Any application that is submitted after this date will be placed on the housing list of applicants according to the date submitted. This will reduce students' chances to secure the rooms/dorms they wish to live in for fall semester.
