What a year it has been! The 2019-20 academic year started off by welcoming a number of very talented students to campus, which is typical of most years. Typical is not a word that can be used to describe much of the rest of the year, however. We had no idea as the year was starting that before the fall semester had come to an end we would have to say goodbye to long-time college employee and educational leader, Vice President of Instruction Bill Taylor. A few months later, the world was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in schools and businesses being closed and major modifications to our daily lives. Southwestern’s classes and services transitioned to online delivery midway through the spring semester and commencement was held virtually for the first time in college history.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. What a year it has been for these professionals, including Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC’s) licensed practical nursing (LPN) and registered nursing (RN) graduates in the field, as well as the students currently enrolled in Southwestern’s nursing programs.

Bill Taylor held legendary status on Southwestern Community College’s campus. With his booming voice, unmistakable shaved head, and calming personality, Taylor was easily recognizable by everyone on campus, and in the community. He perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Southwestern Community College.

Kim Bishop started as Southwestern’s dean of student services on Aug. 20, 2019, just before the start of the fall semester. After wrapping up her first year, Bishop sat down for a question and answer session to reflect on the past year and discuss her vision for the future of Southwestern.

The talent in Southwestern’s School for Music Vocations (SMV) is always apparent; however, this spring the accolades seemed to be even more prevalent for students and instructors alike.

Southwestern Community College and Greater Regional Health partnered to bring Mark Potter, former Newman University head men’s basketball coach, to the SWCC campus on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, in the Student Center gymnasium, to educate students, employees, coaches, and community members about the impact of mental health and overcoming obstacles.
