Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Garrett Abell, of Cromwell, and Blythe Beck, of Sharpsburg, were honored as members of the 2016 All-Iowa Academic Team during a recognition ceremony held Wed., March 2, 2016, 6:30 p.m., at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown in Des Moines.

 Abell, a May 2013 graduate of Creston High School, earned his Associate of Arts degree from SWCC in December 2015, with a major in accounting.  He transferred to Buena Vista University following graduation.  At SWCC, he was on the President’s List, was named an outstanding student in composition, and was a member of Who’s Who Among Students in Junior Colleges.

Beck, a 2013 graduate of Lenox High School, earned her Associate of Arts degree from SWCC in May 2015 and is currently a student in Southwestern’s nursing program.  Upon graduation, she plans to transfer to the University of Iowa.  She is on the President's List, received an Alegent One Recognition award, and is a recipient of the Mason’s Academic Scholarship.

Both students are members of Beta Eta Nu, SWCC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.  Phi Theta Kappa serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students worldwide.
