SWCC Team Plays in T-Fred Memorial Golf Tourney

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) sponsored a team during the annual T-Fred Memorial Golf Tournament, in memory of former SWCC student Trevor Frederickson, on Sat., August 20, 2016, in Atlantic.  SWCC employees (L to R in photo) Morgan Knorr, Lindsay Stumpff, Tracey Evans, and Beth Kulow participated.

Frederickson graduated from SWCC's automotive repair technology program in June 2008.  He competed in baseball for SWCC as well.  On June 18, 2009, Frederickson lost his life in an apartment fire.  Following this tragedy, his family established a scholarship in his name with the SWCC Education Foundation.

The annual golf tournament is hosted by the Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, established in 2013.  The goal of the fund is, "to give back to the community Trevor loved by supporting the projects and organizations that best represent his interests."

Drama Club Accepting 10 Minute Play Submissions

The SWCC Drama Club is now accepting student-, faculty-, or community-written plays for the fall 10 Minute Plays, which will be performed November 17-18, 2016, by the SWCC Drama Club.

SWCC Signs Articulation Agreement with Central Methodist

Representatives from Central Methodist University (CMU), in Fayette, MO, were on campus Tues., August 16, at noon, in the Administration Center, to sign a formal articulation agreement with Southwestern Community College.  This agreement provides information for the transfer of credits from the general transfer degree programs (Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degree programs) toward a bachelor’s degree at CMU.  Representatives from CMU on-hand for the signing were Dr. Rita Gulstad, provost; David Gorton, site coordinator, St. Louis location; and Samuel Mason, assistant dean, College of Graduate and Extended Studies.

Move-In Weekend Information

Welcome to campus, new and returning SWCC students!  Move-in weekend is scheduled for August 20-21.

The SWCC Shoppe will be open in the Student Center on Sat., August 20, and Sun., August 21, from 1-5 p.m. both days.

Sisilia Seavula

Seavula Places Second in Qualifying Olympic Heat

Congrats to Sisilia Seavula, Southwestern Community College sophomore student-athlete, who finished second in her qualifying heat at the Olympic games in Rio this morning! This automatically qualifies Seavula, who runs for her home country of Fiji, to compete in the 100m dash tonight at 8:55 p.m. Central time.  The race will be live on NBC-TV.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees met on Tues., August 9, 2016, at 8 a.m. at the president’s office in the college’s Administration Center.

SWCC Talent Search Program Grant Renewed at $1.8 Million

CRESTON—Southwestern Community College (SWCC) recently received word from the United States Department of Education that funding has been renewed for the college’s Educational Talent Search (ETS) program.  The grant, for $1.8 million, will be funded at $379,200 per year for five years.  This is an increase of $149,300 per year from the previous grant, which was a total of $1.15 million over five years.

SWCC to Implement New LMS for Online Classes

The Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC), of which Southwestern Community College is a member, recently adopted Canvas by Instructure as its new Learning Management System (LMS).  

A Learning Management System is an online learning platform for teaching and learning.  Prior to this switch, the ICCOC utilized Pearson Learning Studio as its platform.  A pilot will begin in the spring of 2017 and Canvas will be fully deployed by fall 2017.

Southwestern’s Board of Trustees Holds July 2016 Meeting

Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. in the board room of the college’s Administration Center for their regular board meeting.

A public hearing was held on the remodeling project planned for room 220 of the Instructional Center.  No oral or written objections or petitions were heard or submitted.
