Southwestern Community College (SWCC) came home with four gold medal finishes following the Iowa SkillsUSA competition on Friday, April 28, at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. These first place finishes qualify the students for national SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, KY, from June 18-23.
Students from SWCC finishing in first place in their respective divisions included:
- Brett Schafroth, SWCC high school carpentry and building trades student from Southwest Valley High School, first place in carpentry (secondary division)
- Joel Hartstack, Clarinda, SWCC auto collision repair/refinish student, first place in collision repair technology (post-secondary division)
- Cory Marquardt, SWCC high school electrical technology student from Creston High School, first place in electrical construction wiring (secondary division)
- Will Peters, New Virginia, SWCC electrical technology student, first place in electrical construction wiring (post-secondary division)
Other students competing for SWCC and receiving recognition included Malachi Hayes, Adair, SWCC electrical technology student, second place in electrical construction wiring (post-secondary division); Gary McVay, Creston, SWCC information technology systems networking student, third place in information technology services (post-secondary division); Gavin Monroe, SWCC high school information technology systems networking student from East Union High School, second place in information technology services (post-secondary division; Jacob Vanbuskirk, SWCC high school carpentry and building trades student from Mount Ayr High School, carpentry (post-secondary division; and Jamie Young, Humeston, SWCC auto collision repair/refinish student, second place in automotive refinishing technology (post-secondary division).
