Three SWCC students attended PTKcatalyst 2018, the Phi Theta Kappa international convention, held April 19-21, at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, MO.
Students attending included Cassidy Becker of Diagonal, 2018-19 Beta Eta Nu chapter officer and Iowa Region vice president; Megan Davenport of Diagonal, All-Iowa Academic Team and 2017-18 Beta Eta Nu chapter officer; and Selena Sampson, 2015-18 Beta Eta Nu chapter officer, All-Iowa Academic Team, and Coca Cola Silver Scholar. The students were accompanied by Jody Nedley-Newcomb, Beta Eta Nu chapter co-advisor.
During the convention, attendees celebrated the Phi Theta Kappa organization turning 100 years old. As an Iowa officer, Becker had the opportunity to walk across the event stage during the Opening Ceremonies with her fellow officers representing the state of Iowa.
According to Sampson, every day of the convention was filled with diverse educational forums and general meetings with well-known and accomplished guest speakers and famous individuals. She described the environment as “inspiring.”
Davenport said there were more than 4,000 Phi Theta Kappa members in attendance. The honor society has grown from eight original chapters in Missouri to approximately 1,285 chapters internationally.
All three SWCC student attendees said the event was an incredible experience they will remember for their lifetimes.
