Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. in the SWCC Administration Center for their regular monthly board meeting.
The board recessed to hold a Collective Bargaining Strategy Session from 5:32-5:45 p.m.
The board approved a proposal to raise in-state and out-of-state tuition by $7 per credit, for the 2018-19 school year. With the increase, total tuition and fees will be $184 per credit for in-state students and $191 for out-of-state students.
Changes approved by the board for other fees for the 2018-19 school year include:
• WEL 224 Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding - $150 course fee to cover the costs associated with the examination fee of the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 certification for the stick process.
• WEL 227 Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding - $150 course fee to cover the costs associated with the examination fee of the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 certification for the MIG process.
• ELT 170 Introduction to PLCs - $205 course fee to cover the costs associated with a student’s Amatrol e-Learning subscription.
• AGM 202 Welding Lab Fee - $30 course fee to cover increased material costs of the welding component for AGM 202 Agricultural Welding.
• ELT 717 Automated Processes and Robotics - $205 course fee to cover the costs associated with a student’s Amatrol e-Learning subscription.
• PEH 142 First Aid CPR Training Fee - $55 course fee to cover the cost of embedding CPR training and certification in the PEH 142 First Aid course. Obtaining CPR certification has been added as a requirement for successful completion of the course.
• ADN Nursing Fee RN - $635 annual fee, charged during the student’s first semester, to cover the cost of supplemental teaching and learning resources that are instrumental in improving student success.
• PN Nursing Fee LPN - $835 annual fee, charged in the student’s first semester, to cover the cost of supplemental teaching and learning resources that are instrumental in improving student success.
In personnel, the board accepted the resignation of Brooke Owen, nursing instructor, effective at the end of her current contract.
Bill Taylor, SWCC vice president of instruction, spoke with the board regarding a proposed Building Partnership Contract with Doug Brunell to provide hands-on electrical experience to career and technical education students in the electrical technology program. With the contract in place, students will assist with a renovation project at the former Franklin School building, 500 S. Oak Street, in Creston. During the project, they will install breaker boxes and run wire. Following Taylor’s presentation, the board approved the agreement.
During the president’s report, Dr. Barb Crittenden, SWCC president, reminded the board of the athletics department’s annual golf fundraiser on Friday, May 18, at Crestmoor in Creston and summer commencement on Friday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m., in the Student Center gymnasium.
Brandi Shay, Small Business Development Center regional director, updated the board on training and services available through the Small Business Development Center on SWCC’s campus.
Following the president’s report, Jerry Smith, SWCC board member from Osceola and also SWCC’s Iowa Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) representative, reported on the recent IACCT board meeting. Smith reminded the board of the summer IACCT Conference, to be held July 18-20, in Mason City.
