As Dr. Marge McGuire-Welch continues settling into her new role as Southwestern Community College (SWCC) president, she has taken time out of her schedule to learn first-hand what it’s like in SWCC’s classrooms. Her most recent adventure was participating as a student in the adult and continuing education department’s 32-hour MIG welding class.
This gas metal arc welding (GMAW) class met for two weeks, beginning Jan. 24, 2022, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 4-8 p.m. During the course, instructor Josh Russell taught students GMAW theory, DC power supplies, five basic weld fit-ups, the four weld positions; and how to use spool gun attachment to weld aluminum.
A TIG welding course, gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) begins on Feb. 14 for students who are interested. Funding—including GEER II, GAP, and PACE funding—is available for these courses for residents of Adair, Adams, Clarke, Decatur, Montgomery, Ringgold, Taylor, and Union counties. There are no income eligibility requirements for GEER II funds. Assessments are required as part of the funding approval process.
