Environmental science class touring city facility

During the last few weeks, Clint Williams’ environmental science class has taken several field trips to see how city services work.

Locations visited by the class have included the Creston water treatment plant, the Union County landfill/transfer station, and the Creston wastewater treatment plant. The group’s final trip was last Monday to the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines.

The highlight of the zoo trip was a chance meeting with former SWCC student Roy Cosner, who is now a zookeeper in the rhinoceros, giraffe, and hoofed animal areas. Cosner gave the students a behind-the-scenes tour of the rhinoceros exhibit where the students had the opportunity to pet a rhino! After completing his two years at SWCC, Cosner transferred to Iowa State where he received a biology degree with an emphasis in wildlife sciences and has been working for the zoo ever since.

The environmental science students pictured are Marco Guimaraes, Grayson Hewett, Hannah Housh, Gunnar Millslagle, and Joey Oathoudt.
