A number of Southwestern Community College (SWCC) School for Music Vocations’ students and vocal groups were honored as 2023 DownBeat Magazine Student Music Award winners, when the June issue was released late last week.
 
SWCC School for Music Vocations’ students and group honored, as well as the awards they received, follow:
  • Vocal Jazz Soloist, High School Honors Co-Winner, Jasione Veil, Southwestern Community College, Vocal Jazz Camp
  • Vocal Jazz Soloist, Community College Co-Winner, Jasione Veil, Southwestern Community College
  • Vocal Jazz Soloist, Community College Co-Winner, Kiersten Conway of Solon
  • Vocal Jazz Soloist, Community College Outstanding Performance, Elijah Thiessen of Marshalltown
  • Small Vocal Jazz Group, Community College Winner, First Take
  • Blues/Pop/Rock Soloist, Community College Winner, Katie Graham of Chicago, Illinois, Vocalist and Bass
  • Blues/Pop/Rock Group, Community College Outstanding Performances, SMV Multiplicity
  • Engineered Studio Recording, Community College Outstanding Recordings, Elijah Thiessen of Marshalltown
 These students and groups were directed by Dr. Jeremy Fox and Kathryn Severing Fox, SWCC School for Music Vocations faculty members.
