The W.D. and Shirley Schafer-Ray Educational Trust awarded more than $273,000 to 45 local students, 28 being Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students, for the 2023-24 academic year.
Individual scholarship amounts ranged from $2,500 to $12,000. The Ray’s Educational Trust awards scholarships to area students attending an accredited college or university next school year, with a portion devoted to those attending Southwestern Community College. All scholarship recipients reside in Adair, Adams, Taylor, and Union counties.
Scholarship winners who will be attending SWCC during the 2023-24 academic year include the following: Mica Andreasen of Creston, Dylan Anson of Creston, Ally Birt of Corning, Logan Bucher of Bedford, Jake Cox of Lenox, Briley Dunning of Creston, Jaycee Fitzgerald of Lenox, Haylee Gillam of Creston, Kaitlynn Hamilton of Afton, Carter Henderson of Creston, Owen Henderson of Creston, Noah Johnson of New Market, Emmet Long of Afton, Riley Long of Afton, Layla Lopez of Afton, Makenzi Martwick of Creston, Josie Miller of Lenox, Trayce Miller of Sharpsburg, Kayla Mitchell of Nodaway, Jake Oathoudt of Corning, Emma Parris of Shannon City, Caylee Pettit of Creston, Draven Pierce of Orient, Ella Powers of Creston, Jacob Roberts of Corning, Hailee Schultz of Creston, Sydney Strunk of Creston, Patrick Varner of Creston, and Christopher Wilson of Creston.

Iowa State Savings Bank serves as trustee for the W.D. and Shirley Schafer-Ray Educational Trust and oversees the scholarship process.
