Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees met electronically on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., for their regular monthly board meeting.

In the absence of Dr. Tony Cass of Creston, board president, and Fred Shearer of Corning, board vice president, Kevin Britten, board member of Red Oak, led the meeting.

During the president’s report, Doug Greene, SWCC director of distance education, gave the board a report on new tools available in Canvas, the online learning management system utilized by SWCC for classes. Greene said the college, in collaboration with the Iowa Community College Online Consortium, “has had to make changes to Canvas to stay ahead of and alongside AI (artificial intelligence).”

Greene spoke about two new resources, Copyleaks and Brainfuse, the college began using in 2023 to assist with efforts to ensure students’ work is original and has been written by a human, and not AI.

During the board members’ reports, Britten thanked Sue Stearns, board member of Woodburn, for stepping up to represent SWCC on the Community Colleges for Iowa board. Stearns had electronic new board member training earlier in the day.
