Southwestern Community College (SWCC) was honored as part of the NASCAR Green program, prior to the start of the DuPont Pioneer 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series at the Newton Speedway on Sat., June 8, 2013. Steve Schmalzried, SWCC automotive repair technology instructor (pictured in center), represented the college on stage for the ceremony. Through the NASCAR Green program, NASCAR donates 10 trees for every green flag that starts or restarts the race. SWCC was chosen for this honor due to the April 14, 2012, tornado that the campus endured. Thanks to NASCAR's generosity, SWCC will receive 60 trees this fall.
