The rain held off Saturday night and Southwestern Community College had a great night at the Adams County Speedway in Corning.  After a number of rainouts, Adams County Speedway fans were out in force and ready for a great night of racing.  Race fans stopped at the SWCC table on their way in the gate to play games, sign up for the "Summer Fun" raffle basket, and win prizes.  SWCC instructors Jeff Magneson, collision repair/refinish, and Jeff Sorensen, automotive repair technology, spoke about their programs on KMA Radio's live racing show.

If you couldn't make it Saturday night, but enjoy racing, mark your calendars for June 29.  SWCC will be at the Clarke County Speedway for another night of fun.  See more photos from the races on SWCC's Facebook page.

Carol King, daughter of the late Evelyn Reed, recently established the Evelyn Reed Memorial Scholarship, through the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Education Foundation, in memory of her mom.

With these funds, two scholarships will be awarded to non-traditional aged SWCC students who demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to education majors with an interest in teaching mathematics.

Reed was a long-time math educator in the Orient and Creston school districts and King is currently a math educator at Creston Middle School.  King was inspired to give these scholarships to help students continue their education no matter their age.

SWCC Student Designs Logo for Local Corp

Published April 26, 2013 12:09 pm

ArtClub TaylorPowersThe SWCC Art Club would like to thank Matura Action Corporation for its donation to the club's annual trip to Chicago!

The students in the SWCC Art and Design department were asked to create a new logo for Matura this spring.  The students enrolled in the computer graphic design course researched the company and its goals, as well as the area and people they serve.  Students were asked to think about colors and typography that related to those goals.  After this research, students created designs which were submitted to Matura Action Corporation along with a detailed explanation of their reasons for color, symbols, and type choices.

From the logos submitted, Matura chose SWCC student Taylor Powers as the winning designer.  Powers is shown in the photo (above right) with Linda Dainty, SWCC art & design instructor; Ron Ludwig, Matura Action Corporation executive director; and Dr. Matt Thompson, SWCC dean of student services.
