The Southwestern Community College board of trustees held a special meeting on February 27, 2014, to discuss and approve plans related to Spartan Court, the residence hall being constructed on campus.

Public hearings were held for the fire sprinkler and electrical bid packages. No oral or written objections were heard or submitted for either project.

 

Following the public hearings, the board approved the low bid of $40,420 from Continental Fire Sprinkler of Omaha, NE, for the fire sprinkler package.

Next on the agenda was consideration of electrical. Following discussion, the board approved the low bid of $529,911 from Armstrong Electric of Greenfield.

Tom Lesan, SWCC vice president of economic development, gave the board a construction update related to the entire project. Lesan said sheeting is on the second floor, third floor walls are being installed, and construction crews are going to start thawing the ground so plumbing rough-ins may be started.

In other business, Dr. Barb Crittenden, SWCC president, reported to the board SWCC sophomore Megan Doubleday from Mt. Ayr has been selected as Iowa’s New Century Scholar. Doubleday will receive a $2,000 scholarship from Coca-Cola and will be one of 51 students nationwide to be recognized at the American Association of Community Colleges annual meeting on April 8 in Washington, D.C.
