Creston, IA—The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) agricultural department is hosting the Iowa State University Extension’s Three-State Beef Conference on Tues., January 13, 2015, from 5:30-8:45 p.m., at the SWCC ag site, north of the college’s Creston campus.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Fulton Abraham and Ty Marker of Osceola placed fifth and Dillon Bailey and Kyle Wynn of Creston placed eighth in the hands-on portion of the 2014 DMACC/IADA High School Automotive Skills Contest on Friday, December 12, 2014, at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. This competition recognizes some of the best high school auto technicians in the state.

Students in the Southwestern Community College welding program faced off in a little friendly competition last week as they created projects that were judged in a holiday art contest. The projects were on display in the Technical Center Friday. Here is a sampling of their work.

The day featured two student panels--the first being a panel of current SWCC students and the second featuring a panel of SWCC graduates who are now at four-year colleges and universities. The day wrapped up with lunch at the Spartan Cafe and a scholarship drawing. Scholarship winners were Angelica Claytor from Creston and Carolina Ibarra from Creston (pictured below from left to right).
This is the second annual Start Here, Succeed Everywhere event.

CRESTON — The TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program at Southwestern Community College is offering free ACT Test prep courses for all ETS high school participants the morning of Sat., January 10, 2015.

Research and display boards made by SWCC students in various classes will be available for perusing during the fall 2014 Poster Day on Wed., December 3, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., in the downstairs hallways of the Student Center. Please stop by to view and evaluate the posters on display.
The event is sponsored by the SWCC Undergraduate Research Committee (SWCCUR), which promotes innovative, creative use of critical thinking in the process of gaining and developing knowledge.

The SWCC School for Music Vocations' Chamber Singers will be on tour performing Holiday Carols in Concert, December 1-5, in the Des Moines area. Nightly concerts starting at 7:30 p.m. will be open to the public with a free-will donation. Tommy Boynton will be the conductor.
The Chamber Singers tour schedule follows:

The Chamber Singers will present their holiday concert locally on Sun., December 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the SWCC Performing Arts Center. Admission for this event is $10/person. Students and seniors are $5/person.

Southwestern Community College’s 2nd Annual Advanced Industrial and Technology (AIT) Exploration Day was a great success! During the event, a select group of students and their instructors from across southwest Iowa spent the day touring two local industries, Vanmark and Wellman Dynamics. It was a fantastic learning experience as the tours reinforced in the students the practical applications of the Employability Skills and the Technology Literacy components set out by the Iowa Common Core.
