Terry Wangberg, early childhood program director at Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in Creston, has been named the 2014 Iowa Children’s Champion.  The award is given by the Region VII Head Start Association.

Wangberg accepted the award via video during the 2014 Region VII Head Start Annual Leadership Conference in Overland Park, KS.  The State Children’s Champion Award recognition was initiated in 2006 by the R7HSA Advocacy Committee as an effort to recognize individuals who make valuable contributions to the lives of children and families across the four Region VII respective states. The award is designed to recognize and honor individuals who “stand out” for leadership, commitment and service and ultimately make a difference.

Wangberg, of Thayer, is a board member of the Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children as the T.E.A.C.H. advisory chair and a member of the Community College Early Childhood Alliance. She is the chairman of the Union County Literacy team. She has served on several state/regional boards and committees, including Secretary of the Iowa Head Start Association boards, President of the Community College Early Childhood Alliance, member of the Child Development Associate Credential Advisory Committee, member of the Professional Levels and Competencies Task Force; member of the Statewide Preschool Advisory Committee, and member of the Region VII Head Start Association Board.
