Southwestern Community College's Drama Club hosted 32 children for the Little Spartan Drama Camps held Wed., June 24, through Fri., June 26, for children ages four-13, at the SWCC Performing Arts Center on the Creston campus.
The main goal for the camps was to introduce children to all aspects of the stage. The campers were given opportunities to learn stage directions, explore roles, how to stay "open" and not "closed," improv, and theater technical aspects. SWCC Drama Club sponsor Kelly Franklin, English instructor, said a highlight of each day was watching the final curtain call to close the day because the excitement was apparent on the kids' faces.
SWCC students and Drama Club members assisting with the camps included Shaquille Beck, Joseph Larson, Liam Ray, and Jennie Stamper, as well as Franklin and fellow English instructor Stephen Jefferies.
Plans are to host the camps annually. According to Franklin, next year's camps will most likely be week-long events, two hours long per age group each day. Franklin's goal is to have each age group perform a short play during the camp finale to end the week.
