Pay it Forward (PIF) Week 2016 has been scheduled for the week of April 18-22! For those of you new to SWCC, during PIF Week SWCC students, faculty, and staff get involved by encouraging positive behaviors and service to the community. The hope is that these efforts will ripple and spread community-wide in Creston, Osceola, and Red Oak.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Richard Welsch and Travis Stalder, both juniors from Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield, placed eighth in the hands-on portion of the 2015 Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC)/Iowa Automobile Dealers Association (IADA) High School Automotive Skills Contest on Friday, December 11, 2015, at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. This competition recognizes some of the best high school auto technicians in the state.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) will induct Rita Schroeder, longtime volleyball coach, graduate, and student-athlete, as its third member of the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Sat., January 23, 2016, at approximately 2:30 p.m., prior to the men’s basketball game vs Iowa Lakes, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., in the college’s Student Center gymnasium.

Creston, IA—CHS Processing and Food Ingredients, Creston, recently donated an Epson interactive whiteboard to Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC’s) agricultural department. This technology-enabled whiteboard has been installed in a classroom at the college’s Ag Site.

Unlike many of the SWCC’s student clubs that have been around for years, the Psychology Club is still in its infancy. Despite its brief history, the club is in full swing and active on campus. This fall, under the guidance of club sponsor Tim Leonard, the club held a fundraiser to purchase club jackets, and more recently participated in the SWCC club Christmas tree decorating contest. Their theme for the contest is “Do you see what I see,” featuring handmade ornaments of inkblots used in the Rorschach test for personality.

On Fri., December 4, Southwestern Community College's survey of world religions class took a field trip to Des Moines to visit six religious groups and tour their facilities.
Stops during the field trip included the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center, Sikh Temple, Grace Church, St George’s Greek Orthodox Church, Temple B’nai Jeshurun (Jewish Synagogue) and Islamic Center. During the visits, class members had opportunities to see inside the different facilities and hear from leaders within each religion about their core beliefs and practices.

Beta Eta Nu, Southwestern Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, recently announced Blythe Beck, nursing student, and Garrett Abell, liberal arts/business major, as the college’s nominees for the 2015-2016 All-USA/Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team and All-Iowa Academic Team.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) carpentry club will be hosting a free will donation ham dinner on Wed., December 16, from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Spartan Café in the college’s Student Center. The dinner will include ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked beans, and a drink.
Proceeds from the free will donation will go toward the carpentry club and the club’s planned trip to south Texas in February to assist with a Habitat for Humanity home-building project.
