The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees met in special session on Tues., October 27, at 8 a.m. in the president’s office of the Administration Center.
During the meeting, the board reviewed quotes from two companies for completion of the asbestos abatement project in the 200-bay of the Instructional Center. College administration had first explained this project to the board during the regular October board meeting, following discovery of the presence of asbestos in ceiling materials during renovation of the 200-bay.
Tom Lesan, SWCC vice president for economic development, told the board five companies were contacted regarding the project. Quotes were received from ICM Insulation, Ltd. of Des Moines, $412,500, and Mid Iowa Environmental of Des Moines, $420,780. Lesan said both companies came to campus to view the project prior to submitting their quotes.
For the project, there is approximately 18,750 square feet of ceiling material that will be removed from the 200-bay. During the process, the area will be cleaned, abated, and cleaned again. Lesan said monitoring of air quality will take place throughout the project.
Following discussion, the board authorized the college to enter into a contract with ICM Insulation, Ltd., for an amount not to exceed $412,500.
Lesan said the project is to be completed by the end of December.
