The Southwestern Community College criminal justice classes hosted a number of guest speakers this past week.
Terry Cowman, associate director of intelligence for the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, visited the investigation class. Cowman talked about the Department of Public Safety and a previous case he closed. The case was a great example of investigation, information gathering, dealing with witnesses, etc.
Special Agent Wayne Brosam from the Iowa State Fire Marshall Division was a guest in the criminal justice classrooms. Brosam talked to students about fire investigation, time with the state patrol tactical teams, and time as a road trooper. His career has been very diverse. He helped students understand the various opportunities at the Department of Public Safety.
Lew Jordan, the Fraud Waste Abuse (FWA) Program integrity manager/special investigations unit manager for United Healthcare’s Iowa Medicaid Program, spoke with students as well. Prior to working with United Healthcare, Jordan worked as an Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID) special agent. Jordan met with students to discuss the difference between the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice), civilian law, and military investigations.
Next week, the SWCC's criminal justice program will have another round of speakers coming in throughout the week. Scheduled at this time are the Decatur County attorney, a special agent from the Federal Railroad & The Protective Security Advisor, and the Department of Homeland Security.
