CRESTON — The TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program at Southwestern Community College is hosting an ACT Boot Camp on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., in the college’s Instructional Center, room 220, to assist high school students in preparation for the ACT Test.

IADA SWCC competitors

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Hunter Ernst of Greenfield and Aden Cosner of Lorimor placed third in the hands-on portion of the 2019 DMACC/IADA High School Automotive Skills Contest on Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. This competition recognizes some of the best high school auto technicians in the state.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees held their regular board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. in the college’s Administration Center.

The meeting began with a report from Iowa community college legislative liaisons Dave Palmer and Jerry Fitzgerald. They briefed the board regarding past and upcoming legislative sessions.

Southwestern Community College's business and information technology department is hosting a Regional High School Business Contest on Friday, Dec. 13, from approximately 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This event will bring more than 200 area high school business students to campus to compete in a variety of business-related contests such as accounting, banking and finance, word processing, interview skills, extemporaneous speaking, graphic design, etc.

The residence halls will be closed from Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, to Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, for winter break. Students may return to campus on Saturday, Jan. 11, to be let into their rooms from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. or Sunday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Please contact your RA or residence hall coordinator to return to your room/apartment or you can report to the housing office in Spartan Suites for assistance.

During the 2019-20 academic year, Southwestern Community College’s Education Foundation is raising funds to increase the size of the college’s Agriculture Program Endowment. This endowment, which was established in 2008, is in place to offer scholarships to students in Southwestern’s ag programs.

Workers working on front side of SWCC ag facility

During the spring of 2019, the Southwestern Community College board of trustees approved an expansion project at the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) agricultural site. The project is estimated at $1.8 million and construction began during summer 2019.

The project includes the following additions to the main facility at the SWCC Ag Site, which is located just north of the Creston campus:
• One 45-person classroom (approximately 1,000 square feet)
• One 24-person lab-style room (approximately 1,000 square feet)
• One 24-person classroom (approximately 750 square feet)
• Student lounge
• Mud room
• Two faculty offices
