jillbiden portrait full lowres WebCreston, IA--Southwestern Community College has confirmed Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President of the United States Joe Biden, will be the guest speaker for the college’s spring 2012 Commencement Ceremony on Fri., May 11, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Southwestern is one of only two community college commencement addresses Dr. Biden will deliver this year. Dr. Biden’s first stop will be Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, FL, on Friday, May 4, 2012.

Dr. Biden works diligently to highlight the importance of community colleges to America’s future. According to her website, she has always said community colleges are “one of America’s best-kept secrets.” During fall 2010, Dr. Biden hosted the first-ever White House Summit on Community Colleges with President Obama, and she continues to work on this outreach on behalf of the Administration—frequently visiting campuses and meeting with students and teachers, as well as reaching out to industry representatives around the country.

Dr. Biden, an educator for more than 30 years, has taught English in community colleges for the past 18 years and continues to teach at a community college in Northern Virginia.

Tornado Wrap-Up - Thank You for Your Help

NOTE:  If you have trouble viewing this video, watch it on YouTube.

To say “thank you” for all of the help from employees, students, board members, and the people of Creston and the surrounding communities just doesn’t seem adequate.  I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support the college has received in the past few days.  It was simply amazing as we were beginning to clean-up debris Sunday morning how people and equipment just started showing up and people went to work.  We have had contacts from a number of other colleges offering assistance and many sent groups to assist with clean-up or donated items for students.
