Creston, IOWA— During the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society’s Annual Convention, held April 4-6, 2024, at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, Lindsay Stoaks, Southwestern Community College (SWCC) president, was one of 24 college presidents honored with the Paragon Award for New Presidents. Stoaks, who was unable to attend the ceremony, received her medallion from the SWCC PTK officers during an informal gathering in the college’s Administration Center on Monday, May 6.

Des Moines, IA – Today, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law to update the Iowa code that determines the distribution of state aid for community colleges between Iowa’s 15 institutions. Instead of the previous fixed formula, community college presidents and CEOs will draft the formula each year, requiring agreement from 10 of the 15 leaders.

During the 2024 Meals from the Heartland event, held on Wednesday, April 24, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., as part of Southwestern Community College's (SWCC's) annual Pay it Forward Week, 100,000 meals were packaged, setting a new record for the event!

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) career and technical education students came home from the Iowa SkillsUSA Championships in Ankeny, held April 25-26, with six first place finishers, two second place finishers, and one third place finisher.
All students finishing in the top spot earned gold medals and qualified for the national SkillsUSA competition from June 24-28 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) announced today Paul Purvis will be the college’s next athletic director. He will begin his duties on April 30, 2024.
Purvis comes to Southwestern from Bellevue, Nebraska, with over 30 years of high school and collegiate coaching and administrative experience. As a student-athlete, Purvis played football for the University of Mississippi. After his playing days concluded, Purvis spent over 30 years teaching and coaching at the high school and collegiate levels. Most notably, he was part of the University of Tennessee football staff from 1997 to 2001 and won a national championship in 1998.
