Throughout the past year, Southwestern board members, administrators, and employees have invested a tremendous amount of time and effort in developing a vision to drive the college forward. The first key pillar was the development of a new master facilities plan during 2023-24. This process was instrumental in identifying a blueprint and vision for future renovation and construction projects with input from students and employees. Several top priority projects and themes emerged from this process, and this issue of the SWCC Mag will provide you with a glimpse into the projects that are moving forward, as well as several other key emerging themes. It has been exciting to see the progress!

Southwestern Community College’s vision for the future made incredible advancements during 2024, with assistance from the college’s updated 10-year master facilities plan, put in place to drive future renovation and construction plans at the college.

During late-2023, the college was awarded a CDL Infrastructure Grant through the Iowa Workforce Development in the amount of $665,000 to be used for building, purchasing, or remodeling CDL training infrastructure.
As part of the college’s ongoing master facilities planning process, options were explored and following an April 2024 board approval a 1,860 square foot addition was constructed on the south side of the Agricultural Sciences Center at the SWCC ag site, north of the Creston campus. The majority of the construction took place during summer and fall 2024.

The 2023-24 academic year was banner-worthy for Southwestern Community College athletics, as two programs received national honors.
As a whole, the SWCC athletic department recorded a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.39 during the Spring 2024 semester, an all-time high for the department.

After a Hall of Fame coaching career spanning more than 40 years, adding a new career highlight to the top of the list can be a challenge.
But, when SWCC Head Softball Coach Danny Jensen received word he was this year’s winner of the BSN Sports #DunkdChallenge and the $10,000 grand prize that came with it, he knew he’d added another achievement to that list.

The Community Colleges for Iowa celebrated the 2024 winners of the annual Community Colleges for Iowa Awards, including two Southwestern Community College (SWCC) employees pictured with Lindsay Stoaks (center), Regina Long (left) of Creston and Kim Oaks (right) of Murray, during a reception and dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, at the Des Moines Marriott in downtown Des Moines.

During 2024, the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association (IADA) Foundation for Education awarded Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC’s) automotive programs a $4,761 grant to provide funds for equipment, tools, and program development.

The new SWCC advertising campaign, We Are ONE, is now underway! Watch for ads, billboards, digital content, and social media posts utilizing the We Are ONE theme throughout 2025.
The theme is largely focused on some of the top reasons students list when asked why they feel connected and enjoy attending SWCC—for example the community atmosphere, small class sizes, and being called by name.
