CRESTON — Representatives from Southwestern Community College (SWCC) were on-hand in early-August, at Osceola Foods, a local manufacturing facility owned by Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:HRL), to sign six Osceola Food employees for SWCC’s applied engineering technology program. In addition, two students will be returning for the second year of SWCC’s applied engineering technology program.

SWCC will host its annual Community Awareness Day on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 9-11 a.m. in the main hallway of the Instructional Center. All SWCC students and employees are invited to attend!

Osceola, Iowa, July 28, 2023--In 2022, and in support of Clarke County Hospital’s (CCH) Grow Our Own initiative, a collaborative partnership between the hospital, Clarke Community School District (CCSD), and Southwestern Community College (SWCC) was developed to offer health occupations and Certified Nursing Assistant classes to CCSD students.

Experience Southwestern, originally planned for Aug. 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Creston campus, is being postponed to Thursday, Aug. 3, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., to permit SWCC faculty and staff to attend the visitation and funeral for Ella Leonard of Winterset, who passed away on July 23, 2023, following injuries sustained in a car accident with other SWCC students. In addition, the Creston campus will be closed Aug. 2 to permit employees to attend the visitation and funeral.

Funeral arrangements for Halsie Barnes have been announced by the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr. An open visitation will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, from 12-8 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. Family will be present from 3-8 p.m. Services for Barnes will be held on Saturday, July 29, at 2 p.m., in the Mount Ayr High School gymnasium.

The students of Southwestern Community College are planning an evening candlelight service to celebrate the lives of Halsie Barnes and Ella Leonard on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, beginning at 8:15 p.m., at the Spartan softball field on the north side of the Creston campus.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) came home with two national medal winners—Brady Pearson (pictured at left) of Knoxville received gold in electrical technology and Lucas Lynch (pictured at right) of Creston placed silver in collision repair—following the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships, held June 19-23, in Atlanta, Georgia.
