Southwestern students,
As we continue to monitor and prepare for a COVID-19 outbreak in Iowa, we want to communicate and share as much information as possible regarding our current status and plans. As I mentioned in last week’s email, a campus workgroup is continuing to meet and develop plans as we learn more information from the CDC and the Iowa Department of Public Health regarding the spread of the virus both internationally and within the United States.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees held its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at 5:30 p.m. in the board room of the college’s Administration Center.
The first action item on the agenda was consideration of the fiscal year 2021 budget. A public hearing was held and no oral or written objections or petitions were heard or submitted. The board approved the budget as presented.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Chase Miner of Leon and Ella Rutherford of Niantic, Illinois, were honored as members of the 2020 All-Iowa Academic Team during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and held Monday, March 2, 2020, at 5:30 p.m., at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines.

Southwestern students,
As Spring Break approaches, we want you to continue to be alert and aware in regard to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). As mentioned in yesterday’s SWCC Weekly, a campus workgroup met yesterday and will continue to meet in an effort to plan for prevention and response in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak in Iowa. We’re working with city and county health officials coordinating plans daily. Currently, there are no reported cases of COVID-19 on the Southwestern Community College campus or in the state of Iowa.

Friday, March 6, 2020--Southwestern Community College, with guidance from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Iowa Department of Public Health, is closely monitoring the spread of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). On Thursday, March 5, a campus workgroup met and will continue to meet in an effort to plan for prevention and response in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak in Iowa. A plan is in place and the group will continue to monitor and make decisions regarding college travel or if cases become widespread in the state.

Students from Southwestern Community College's criminal justice program went on a work site visit to the Des Moines metro area.
First up, students visited the State of Iowa Supreme Court, where they were able to tour the court rooms including the Iowa Supreme Courtroom. A few students viewed a live hearing in the court appeals.
