Southwestern Community College’s welding program hosted their 2018 Welding Skills Challenge and Industry Career Fair for high school students on Thursday, March 29, 2018, in the college’s Technical Center.

MARCH 30, 2018--The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) auto collision repair/refinish program is one of 163 career and technical education programs nationwide recognized by The Collision Repair Education Foundation through its new designation program called the Collision School Career Readiness Benchmark.
The Collision Repair Education Foundation launched the Collision School Career Readiness Benchmark in 2016. Through the program, the foundation classifies schools in three tiers: Tier 1, advanced; Tier 2, proficient; and Tier 3, developing. SWCC is one of 17 schools receiving Tier 1 designation.
Jeff Magneson, SWCC auto collision repair/refinish instructor, said this recognition is a huge testament for the quality of SWCC’s program.
“This benchmark validates the work SWCC and the program’s advisory committee have put into the collision repair program to make it one of the best for future technicians,” Magneson stated. “We are especially excited to extend this program to area high school students next fall.”
Starting fall 2018 semester, SWCC’s auto collision repair/refinish program will be offered as a Career Academy to high school students in SWCC’s region, meaning high school students will be able to enroll in collision repair/refinish college classes and receive credit at both their high school at SWCC. Upon high school graduation, students will then have the option to continue on to a full program in collision repair/refinish. SWCC offers a one-year diploma program and a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree program in auto collision repair/refinish.

Creston, IOWA—One of the finest vocal groups in the world, The Real Group, is flying from Sweden directly to Creston to headline the inaugural SMV (School for Music Vocations) Real Group Festival on April 6 and 7, 2018, at Southwestern Community College (SWCC). This is the first festival of its kind in the United States, and The Real Group selected Creston as its home.

Limited tickets remain for this weekend's SWCC Drama Club performances of And Then There Were None!
Tickets to this weekend's Drama Club performances are pre-sale ONLY! Performances are scheduled for Thursday, March 29, and Friday, March 30, at 7 p.m., as well as Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m., in the Performing Arts Center on the Creston campus. As of Tuesday, March 27, the Saturday performance is sold out and there is limited seating available for the Thursday and Friday performances.

Meet and greet and send-off
The send-off ceremony for the Southwestern men’s basketball team, as they head to the NJCAA National Championship in Danville, IL, will be held on Sunday, March 18, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Student Center. The public is invited! Plan to wear your Spartan colors.
The agenda for the ceremony follows:
- 1 p.m. – Autographs and well wishes to the team and the coaches
- 1:30 p.m. – Head Coach Todd Lorensen speaks
- 1:45 p.m. – Players and coaches walk through human tunnel to bus

On Tuesday, March 13, Southwestern Community College’s Beta Eta Nu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa elected officers for the 2018-19 year. Officers elected include Cassidy Becker of Diagonal, Shelby Freestone of Adel, Kasydi Klommhaus of Mt. Ayr, Paul Lorenz of Creston, and Hunner Siefkas of Peru.
According to Jody Nedley-Newcomb, Beta Eta Nu chapter co-advisor, electing officers near mid-term of the semester allows current officers and new officers time to work together for continuity of programs for the chapter. The chapter will be looking for one more individual to complete the officer team.
The next Beta Eta Nu meeting will be on Monday, April 9, at 3:30 pm (room to be decided). The Spring Formal Induction is Sunday, April 15, at 3 pm in the Allied Health & Science Center. Any member who has not previously attended an induction is invited. Friends, family, faculty, staff, and administration are welcome.

And Then There Were None features 10 strangers, who are summoned to a remote island. All that the guests have in common is a wicked past they're unwilling to reveal and a secret that will seal their fate, for each has been marked for murder. As the weather turns and the group is cut off from the mainland, the bloodbath begins and one by one they are brutally murdered in accordance with the lines of a sinister nursery rhyme.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees held its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 5:30 p.m., in the board room of the Administration Center.
A public hearing was held for the college’s fiscal year 2019 budget. No oral or written objections or petitions were heard or submitted. The board approved the budget as presented.
