Creston, IA—During a special session of the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in the board room of the college’s Administration Center, the board approved the employment of Laurie McCown as a criminal justice instructor for the balance of the 2024-25 academic year.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Disc Golf Club will host its 10th Annual Indoor Disc Golf Tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at the old Walmart building at 614 New York Ave in Creston, next to the Tractor Supply Co.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Lucas Danley of Osceola and Cole Struble of New Virginia, seniors at Clarke Community Schools placed fourth in the hands-on portion of the 2024 DMACC/IADA High School Automotive Skills Contest on Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. This competition recognizes some of the best high school auto technicians in the state.

The Community Colleges for Iowa celebrated the 2024 winners of the annual Community Colleges for Iowa Awards, including two Southwestern Community College (SWCC) employees, Regina Long of Creston and Kim Oaks of Murray, during a reception and dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, at the Des Moines Marriott in downtown Des Moines.

The Fall 2025 semester is bringing changes to the applied engineering technology program and a new Career Academy opportunity to the eastern part of Southwestern’s region.

In partnership with Red Oak Community School District and the Red Oak community, Southwestern re-established the carpentry and building trades Career Academy program during the fall 2024 semester. Students from Red Oak enrolled in the 15-credit Career Academy earning both college and high school credit. The Career Academy enrolled six high school students who are building a 1,400 sq. ft. home in Red Oak (shown above).
