Beta Eta Nu, Southwestern Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, held its Spring Induction Ceremony on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at 3 p.m., in the Allied Health and Science Center on SWCC's campus.

Two Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students qualified for the Business Professionals of America (BPA) National Leadership Conference after competing at the Iowa Spring Leadership Conference held February 19-20, 2017, in Des Moines. Shawna Abell, an administrative office technology major from Greenfield, and Jenna Shepherd, an associate of arts/college transfer student from Creston, will be making the trip to the national conference, from May 9-14, in Orlando, FL.
Students are required to place in the top three at state competition in order to qualify for nationals. Abell received the following awards during state competition: Administrative Support Concepts, third place; Basic Office Systems & Procedures, sixth place; and Administrative Support Team (with teammate Shepherd), fifth place. She will compete in Administrative Support Concepts at nationals. Shepherd placed in the following categories: Administrative Support Concepts, first place; Business Meeting Management Concepts, third place; Interview Skills, third place; and Administrative Support Team (with teammate Abell), fifth place. She will compete in Administrative Support Concepts and Business Meeting Management Concepts at nationals.

The Beta Eta Nu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa will be holding its Spring Formal Induction on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at 3 p.m. in the Allied Health and Science Center on Southwestern Community College’s Creston campus.
All Phi Theta Kappa members, families, faculty, and staff are invited to attend. Questions may be directed to Jody Nedley-Newcomb, co-advisor for the Beta Eta Nu chapter.
Phi Theta Kappa International serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students worldwide. Beta Eta Nu is SWCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Drama Club will perform Neil Simon's hilarious comedy, God's Favorite, on March 30, 31, and April 1, 2017, at 7 p.m. each evening at the SWCC Performing Arts Center in Creston. Tickets, $5 for students and $7 for the general public, may be purchased at the door.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Rebekah Kroese of Lenox, Selena Sampson of Creston, and Ana Vasquez of Osceola, were honored as members of the 2017 All-Iowa Academic Team during a recognition ceremony held Wed., March 1, 2017, at 6:30 p.m., at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines.

Representatives from Southwestern Community College made the trek to the state capitol in Des Moines yesterday, Feb. 28, for 2017 Community College Day on the Hill, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
During this event, community college trustees, presidents, staff, and business partners showcased career and technical education programs from throughout the state. At the SWCC table, the welding program was featured. Ben Williamson, second year welding student from Winterset, accompanied the SWCC delegation to the event. Williamson answered questions related to the welding program from elected officials, community college presidents, and other passers-by throughout the day.

Beta Eta Nu, Southwestern Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, brought home a number of awards from the Phi Theta Kappa Iowa Region Convention, held Feb. 24-25, at Des Moines Area Community College in Newton. In attendance at the convention from SWCC were students, Gabe Esser, of Winterset, and Gabrielle Annonson, of Robbinsdale, MN, as well as Jody Nedley-Newcomb, Beta Eta Nu co-advisor.
Individual and team awards earned by SWCC included:

Creston—The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. in the Administration Center on the Creston campus.
The board set a public hearing for review and approval of the college’s fiscal year 2018 budget. The public hearing was set for March 14, 2017, at 5:30 p.m., in the board room of the college’s Administration Center.
