First Take, an elite six-member vocal jazz ensemble made up of Southwestern Community College School for Music Vocations’ students, will be performing live this weekend at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference, held Feb. 22-25, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Feb. 17, 2023, CRESTON, IOWA—The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, at 5:30 p.m., in the Administration Center board room.
The board agenda included an action item to set a public hearing for review and approval of the college’s fiscal year 2024 budget. Dr. Marge McGuire-Welch, SWCC president, asked the board to postpone the action item due to ongoing conversations at the state level regarding Senate File 181, which is related to tax valuations for the upcoming fiscal year. Dr. Tony Cass of Creston, board president, agreed to postpone the item until the March 2023 board of trustees meeting.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) professional music department will host a Jazz Recital on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m., in the Instructional Center, room 520. The recital will feature music and historical notes of African-American singers and composers.

Free journals will be available for all SWCC students, with supplies available to personalize the journal cover. In addition, students will learn about light therapy boxes that will be available for checkout from the SWCC Shoppe following this event.
This is a come-and-go event. FREE snacks will be available throughout. The event is sponsored by student activities and SWCC student services.
