Funeral arrangements for Halsie Barnes have been announced by the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr. An open visitation will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, from 12-8 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. Family will be present from 3-8 p.m. Services for Barnes will be held on Saturday, July 29, at 2 p.m., in the Mount Ayr High School gymnasium.

The students of Southwestern Community College are planning an evening candlelight service to celebrate the lives of Halsie Barnes and Ella Leonard on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, beginning at 8:15 p.m., at the Spartan softball field on the north side of the Creston campus.

A come-and-go grief counseling and gathering session will be held on Monday, July 24, in the Instructional Center, room 180, from 2-4 p.m. All members of the SWCC family are invited to attend.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) came home with two national medal winners—Brady Pearson (pictured at left) of Knoxville received gold in electrical technology and Lucas Lynch (pictured at right) of Creston placed silver in collision repair—following the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships, held June 19-23, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Copy Center, located in the upstairs of the Instructional Center on SWCC's Creston campus, will be closed until Tuesday, June 27, due to unforeseen circumstances. The Learning Resource Center (LRC)/library staff, 641.782.1462, has access to the Copy Center and will assist with basic copy needs if they are time sensitive. The LRC is located in the Instructional Center, main floor.

Planning is underway for the Junction Town Showdown, a truck show and tractor pull, scheduled for June 30-July 2, 2023, at the Clarke County Fairgrounds in Osceola. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Southwestern Community College's Education Foundation for the purpose of funding career and technical education scholarships for students.

Last week, Southwestern Community College's TRIO-Student Support Services (SSS) program was notified two SWCC TRIO-SSS members--Alexis Beberniss, of Lenox, and Brenna Bruns, of Greenfield--were selected for scholarships from the state TRIO-SSS organization.
